NHF statement on the death of Awaab Ishak

23 November 2022

Kate Henderson, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation says:

“Social housing providers must act to make sure the events that led to the tragic death of Awaab Ishak never happen again. The Secretary of State was right to call on the sector to respond to the coroner’s recommendations and housing associations will be urgently responding to the request from the Regulator of Social Housing.  As the trade body for housing associations in England, the National Housing Federation (NHF) is committed to making sure our members understand and act upon the critical lessons from Awaab’s death.

“Every person living in social housing deserves to have a good quality, safe home. When residents raise concerns they must be listened to. It’s clear that this is not happening for every resident, which is why earlier this year the NHF and Chartered Institute of Housing commissioned the independent Better Social Housing Review.

“We are expecting recommendations from the Better Social Housing Review in the coming weeks, outlining practical actions housing associations need to take to tackle issues of poor quality housing.”
