Improving diversity, equality and inclusion is key to achieving our ambition of improving trust in our sector. It also goes to the heart of who we are as organisations and what we stand for as a sector. Housing associations are driven by strong social values, but there is more that we can and should be doing to ensure our leadership is diverse, and that our workplaces embrace equality.
There is already some great practice, but there is a lot more we can do by learning from each other. The Federation wants to support our sector to be the best we can be when it comes to employing a diverse workforce, having a diverse cohort of leaders, and ensuring our members are able to understand and tackle inequality.
We’ve set up a group with our members to drive a shift in culture in delivering inclusive workplaces. The group will co-create a programme of work with the Federation, which will help to show leadership when it comes to diversity in our sector.
This new group is part of our wider programme of work to demonstrate sector leadership on EDI.Find out more
This new tool developed by the NHF enables housing associations to compare workforces to the communities they serve. By supporting the sector to better understand the diverse characteristics of their residents, and how their workforces compare to them, we are ensuring the sector forms a solid foundation for ensuring sector leadership is diverse, and that housing association workplaces embrace equality.
As a starting point, in Autumn 2020 we launched our full report on equality, diversity and inclusion in housing association staff in England which has been created to help housing providers understand where we currently are as a sector and start a conversation on where we’d like to get to.Read the full report
Equality, diversity and inclusion is vital within our sector, the communities we serve and the people who work in our organisations.
Over the last few years we have seen some fantastic examples of how housing associations are creating initiatives and assessing their internal practices to make sure they are being as inclusive as possible.
We recently hosted a webinar on the launch of our equality, diversity and inclusion report with guest speakers and a Q&A with members about this piece of work and how you can take it forward in your organisation.
You are able to access the recording of it now.Watch here
To keep up momentum and to create further opportunities for collaboration, at the start of 2021 we launched two national networks.
Our CEO National Network meets online every few months to learn from and engage with peers and to hear from expert speakers. The purpose of this network is to explore the crucial role of CEO’s in creating an inclusive culture in their organisation.
Our National Network for EDI professionals is open to anyone in the sector working on improving EDI in their organisation, whether this is a formal responsibility or a personal passion. The group also meets every few months and come together to share practical ideas, and to learn from external speakers and the network.
