Great Places

In March 2018 the National Housing Federation appointed the Great Places Commission to explore what makes a great place, and what role housing associations can and do play in creating thriving and successful communities.

The Commission’s work focused specifically on urban areas in the North and the Midlands, which face specific challenges around quality, connectivity and opportunities.

The Commission visited places across the North and the Midlands, and met local residents and stakeholders, to gather evidence for its final recommendations.

The Commission published these recommendations in August 2019, explaining how housing associations, the Government and local partners can work together to create great places.

Final recommendations

The Commission published its final report in August 2019, setting out 10 clear recommendations for housing associations, the Government and local partners. You can read the final report here.

The Commission also published an interim report in November 2018, which detailed its findings so far and the feedback the Commission gathered from residents and stakeholders. It set out a series of questions for further exploration, which provided the basis for the final recommendations. You can read the interim report here.

What happens next

The Federation has fully endorsed the Commission’s recommendations, and is committed to working with housing associations, the Government and local partners to take these forward over the next 18 months.

Stay tuned for updates and our next steps in Spring 2020.
