Response to the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission’s report

30 January 2020

Responding to the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission’s report, Kate Henderson, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation, said:

“We welcome the publication of the Commission’s report today, which rightly highlights the need for good design and construction standards when building new homes. These are not just things that are nice to have, but essential parts of building cohesive, sustainable communities.

“We are proud that the social housing sector has a good track record of delivering high-quality homes. The Commission recognises that these are a vital part of the fabric of our society, and that we often build homes to higher standards than much housing for sale on the open market. Housing associations have a long-term interest in the communities they serve – this means being good stewards, investing in places and in the people who live there.

“We agree with the Commission that we urgently need to be building more housing that is truly affordable for people on the lowest incomes and ordinary working families.”
