Our policy work

We’re working with the government to help housing associations deliver more new homes.

Our policy work on supply is geared towards:

  • Supporting our members to develop more homes, including for social rent.
  • Understanding the challenges in accessing skills and materials required to build more homes.
  • Supporting our members to access funding and financial support from the government to deliver the housing the country needs.
  • Understanding changes in affordable home ownership and its impact on delivery.
  • Influencing reform in the planning system to maximise the delivery of affordable housing.
  • Understanding the challenges of long term regeneration and supporting members to address them.

Funding

We’re working with members and the government to support access to grant funding and to address the barriers to building new homes.

We are pleased that the government has listened to the sector’s ambition to build more affordable homes for those who need them most, including funding for social rent and supported housing. The new Affordable Homes Programme 2021-26 includes 50% of the available funding for discounted rent, which is the highest level in a decade.

You can read our grant modelling report to find out more about the funding required to meet housing need over the next decade.

Planning

The upcoming Planning Bill will have a significant impact on the supply of affordable housing.

We’re engaging with members and stakeholders to respond to reform proposals and ensure the new planning system will maximise the delivery of new affordable homes.

Affordable home ownership

We are working with members and the government to understand how policy changes affecting affordable home ownership such as leasehold reform and the new shared ownership model and First Homes, will impact the delivery of more affordable housing.
