NHF signs joint letter calling for long-term support funding for Housing First

15 September 2021

Along with charities Homeless Link, Crisis and St Mungo’s and more, the NHF have signed a joint letter to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick MP, and Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak MP, asking them to extend funding for three pilots of Housing First in the West Midlands, Liverpool and Greater Manchester. Housing First is a housing and support approach which:

  • Gives people who have experienced homelessness, chronic health and social care needs a stable home from which to rebuild their lives.
  • Provides intensive, person-centred, holistic support that is ongoing and without an end date.
  • Is available to any individual who desires a tenancy, with no further conditions attached.

We have taken this action to prevent a cliff edge for the people housed through the programme.

In the letter, we also call for secure, long-term funding, so that flexible Housing First support can be provided to people for as long as it is needed. We make the case that, along with stable housing, the intensive, wrap around support that Housing First offers helps people stay housed. This will help meet the government’s goal of ending rough sleeping by 2024.
