Our response to the call for evidence on housing disrepair claims

19 February 2026

The government has been collecting evidence on claims management companies (CMCs) and solicitors' activities in housing disrepair claims, and their impact on residents. In February, we submitted evidence on behalf of the sector, based on the experiences of our members.

At the NHF, alongside our members, we support better routes to redress for residents when things go wrong. We support the government’s reforms to improve the condition of rented housing in England and aim to ensure that every resident has a safe, good quality home. However, for a number of years, our members have reported that some claims management companies and solicitors are using unethical practices that could pose a financial and mental wellbeing risk to residents.

We are pleased that the government is listening to residents and social housing providers, with the aim of making sure that the complaints process and legal redress is fair and effective for residents.
