The Building Safety Bill is the most important piece of building safety legislation in recent years. The Bill was published in early July 2021 and began its progress through Parliament.
The Bill will introduce significant changes to building safety regulation, as recommended in the Hackitt Review, including a new, more stringent, regime for higher-risk buildings and a Building Safety Regulator.
It's expected to take up to a year for the Bill to pass through Parliament and gain Royal Assent. Much of the detail of the law will come in regulations, most of which are expected to be published between now and six months after receiving Royal Assent. The new regulatory system will then begin in stages in the 18-month period after Royal Assent, including the requirements to register occupied buildings with the regulator and for dutyholders to adopt their new responsibilities.
We will continue to keep our members updated on the progress of the Bill as it progresses through Parliament.Download our Building Safety Bill member briefing
